A Quick Getaway; Boston July 9-10

With no hard travel plans for Krisanngria this weekend, we’ll hang around Savin Hill Yacht Club and, if we feel like it, stay the nights on the mooring.  If we don’t feel like it then home is only 15 minutes away.

Friday night is twilight race night with live entertainment on the club’s deck. Krisann and I have the always excellent and always reasonable dinner from the club galley. (We should eat there more often.)  In my head, I had grand plans to carouse a little and then stay on the boat. The reality however, was that we were home and in bed by 10:30.   The siren-song of home’s comfortable bed was irresistible and we listened.

Captain, Captain, and Captain

Saturday morning, Krisann and I were volleying ideas back and forth about how to spend the day when she proposed a quick (nothing is quick in a sailboat), overnight trip to the new-ish Fan Pier Marina.   It was a perfect idea because yesterday, I discovered that my mooring ball was submerged and we had to vacate the premises for our mooring service to resolve the issue. At our location at the mouth of the Neponset River there is a strange mix of tide, current, and wind that often causes fouling like this, but I hoped that the chain might untangle itself overnight.  The chain, however, didn’t release.

Fan Pier Marina is marina is located in the middle of the trendy Seaport district and it is priced accordingly.  For Krisanngria’s petite 31 foot length we were charged a whopping $250 for the night. That would be OK, after all, a hotel room nearby would have cost us at least twice that amount. But on arrival, however, two issues were soon uncovered.  One, the bathrooms are public. That is, they are not dedicated to the marina. I am guessing this is probably some form of public accommodation agreement that was made in order to get permission to develop on the waterfront.  But, because this is a heavily trafficked area, predictably, the bathrooms were a mess.  There are also bathrooms that are supposed to available to the public in the luxury condo towers lining the waterfront. Coincidentally or perhaps predictably, I am a cynic afterall, they were all posted “out of order”.

Two, the showers were also out of order and unavailable to us for the duration of our stay. We do have a shower on board, but my tankage is small and I don’t like introducing additional moisture into our living space.   Had we been made aware of these two issues prior to booking, we may have reconsidered our destination. Yet, the only response we received to our concerns however was, effectively, a shrug.   In my opinion, for these kind of rates a marina should have at a minimum, a dedicated, well-maintained bathroom and shower facility available to its guests and members.

Once Krisanngria was squared away at the dock, we walked Belle through the Seaport.   She again attracted many admirers and it took us forever to go nowhere.  Later, our friend Jeannie joined us for a visit and a drink in the cockpit then moving ashore, the three of us had a late lunch/early dinner at Davio’s Waterfront.  There, we ran into a couple of my friends from Stonehill College who graciously gave up their seats for the ladies to sit at the crowded bar.  Davio’s Seaport is one of our local favorites both for its excellent food and extraordinary views of the harbor.

Before setting sail for home on Sunday we took an early morning walk through a deserted Seaport.   Morning is the best part of the day…
